Speaking & communication
Communication skills you can actually practise
"Improve your communication skills" is unusable advice until you split it into parts you can drill: saying the point first, listening well enough to repeat it back, structuring an answer, and holding your tone when you are challenged. Each of those is a separate skill with its own practice.
The five skills, and a drill for each
- 1ClarityDrill: answer any question in exactly one sentence, then stop and let them ask for more.
- 2StructureDrill: situation, what you did, result, in that order, in under 60 seconds.
- 3ListeningDrill: before you reply, say back the other person's point in your own words.
- 4Tone under pressureDrill: when challenged, slow down and drop your volume slightly instead of raising it.
- 5ClosingDrill: end every discussion by naming who does what by when.
How to know which one to work on
Record yourself in a real-ish conversation for five minutes and listen back once. The problem announces itself: either people had to ask you to get to the point, or you never checked what they meant, or the whole thing ended without a decision. Work on the loudest one for two weeks before touching the others.
Practising without a partner
The hard part of communication practice is that it needs another person who will react. That is what SpeakUp AI provides: a partner who answers, disagrees, gets distracted and follows up, plus a report that tells you which of the five skills above actually showed up.
Common questions
- How long does it take to improve communication skills?
- Structure changes within a couple of weeks of deliberate practice. Habits tied to nerves — filler words, speed, over-explaining — usually take one to three months of regular reps.
- Are communication skills learnable if I'm naturally quiet?
- Yes, and quiet people often get further, because they tend to listen well already. The work is usually about taking up space earlier in the conversation, not about becoming louder.
