Conversation practice with a partner who talks back
Conversation is a two-person skill, which is why it is so hard to practise alone. SpeakUp AI gives you a partner who answers, changes the subject, gets bored, disagrees and asks about you — so you can rehearse the moments that usually go wrong without a real relationship on the line.
The moments worth rehearsing
- The first 20 seconds — opening without a script and without an apology.
- The handoff — turning their one-word answer into a real exchange.
- The lull — what you say when the topic dies.
- The disagreement — staying warm while holding your position.
- The exit — leaving a conversation cleanly instead of drifting away.
Three lines that reliably restart a stalled conversation
Use their words, not a new topic
- "You said you just moved — what made you pick here?"
- "Okay, I have to ask about the harder version of that."
- "What's been the best part of your week? Genuinely, not the polite answer."
How the practice runs
- 1Choose who you're talking toA stranger at a work event, a first date, a friend who is upset with you.
- 2Talk for five minutesAwkward pauses included — they are the point.
- 3Read the breakdownQuestion-to-statement ratio, how often you followed up, where you changed the subject away from yourself.
- 4Try the same conversation differentlyOne change: ask one follow-up before offering your own story.
Common questions
- Can I really practise conversation with AI?
- For the mechanics — openings, follow-ups, recovering from a lull, holding a disagreement — yes, because those depend on your behaviour rather than on the other person being human. Chemistry cannot be practised, but everything that gets in its way can.
- What if I run out of things to say?
- That is the most useful session to have. Practise the recovery move: ask a follow-up about something they already said, rather than searching for a new topic.
