Practice scenario

First date conversation practice

First dates go wrong in predictable places: the first two minutes, the lull twenty minutes in, and the ending. This scenario lets you rehearse all three with someone who reacts, so the real one is not your first attempt.

The three moments worth practising

  1. 1The openingGetting past "how was the traffic" into something either of you cares about.
  2. 2The lullReaching back into something they said instead of grabbing a new topic.
  3. 3The endingSaying clearly that you enjoyed it, or ending warmly when you did not.

What good date conversation actually looks like

Following versus interviewing

Before: "So what do you do? … Cool. Any hobbies? … Nice. Do you like travelling?"

After: "You said you moved here for the job — was it worth it? … What do you miss?"

Two follow-ups on one thread beats six unconnected questions. Dates that feel like interviews usually have plenty of questions and no follow-ups.

What the feedback shows

  • How much of the conversation you took up.
  • Follow-ups asked versus topics changed.
  • Whether you answered questions about yourself or deflected them.
  • Where the energy dropped, and what you did next.

Common questions

Isn't practising a date artificial?
The chemistry cannot be rehearsed. The mechanics — openings, follow-ups, recovering from a lull, a warm ending — are your behaviour, and they transfer.
Can I practise a specific situation?
Yes, describe it: a first date from an app, a set-up by friends, a second date where you want to be more direct.
